Security Tips
Personal safety is a serious matter. At times, it may seem as though nothing could happen to endanger you or your family. Natural disaster, home invasion, or serious auto accidents can occur without warning.
Take an active role in your family’s security by following these simple guidelines.
Residential Security
- Use quality locks on all entrances, including service doors and gates.
- Don’t leave keys “hidden” outside.
- Keep doors locked even when you are home.
- Install locks on fuse boxes/power panels and other external power sources.
- If you have bars on your windows, regularly review fire safety and escape routes with your family.
- If you have security alarms, check and use them.
- Keep at least one fire extinguisher on each floor, in addition to one in the kitchen.
- Regularly check smoke detectors and replace batteries.
- Vary daily routines and avoid predictable behavior patterns.
- Know where all family members are at all times.
- Supervise children at malls, movies, arcades, parks, and other public places.
- Always listen to your kids.
Security for Children
- Teach your children to never answer the door to strangers.
- Children should know local emergency phone numbers or how to dial 911.
- Children, even young ones, should know their name, address, and phone number. Post this information near a phone.
- Caution teenagers (especially college-bound young adults) about “blind dates”, meeting strangers, and the dangers of Internet predators.
- Teach children to never give out personal information, such as home address, absence of adults, etc. over the phone or on the Internet. Even small details over time can be compiled to find a child’s location.
- Teach children to say no to strangers or even people they know if they are uncomfortable with the situation. Adults do not need assistance from children, especially children the do not know.
- Teach children how to get out of the house and where to go in case of emergency.
